MMA and Marijuana

It is no secret that marijuana use is very common among mixed martial arts fighters, specifically in the UFC. In this article we will list some of the fighters that have publicly come out to support the use of marijuana over the years.

Sean O’Malley

Sean O’Malley is a lightweight UFC fighter that has talked about his marijuana usage publicly for a while now. He admitted in an interview with TMZ to smoking marijuana with rapper Snoop Dog after a fight one night.

O’Malley even went as far as to release his very own marijuana strain called Sugar Show OG. This strain is a reference to the fighter’s nickname, and it is a combination of the OG 92 and Lemonhead strains.

Matt Riddle

Matt Riddle is another UFC fighter that has never been shy about admitting that he uses marijuana on a regular basis. He failed two drug tests after a couple of bouts, only to be exiled from the sport. Riddle went on to become a professional wrestler, earning a number of impressive accolades, including Rookie of the Year.

Riddle has stated that he first started using marijuana to reduce pain. He was looking for a way to deal with muscle soreness without turning to prescription pain killers.

Jon Jones

Anyone who is familiar with MMA will tell you that Jon Jones is among the most talented fighters to ever grace the sport. He has made a point of speaking openly about using marijuana as a means of quitting harder drugs along with alcohol. While he admits to still indulging in other substances on occasion, he still mostly just uses cannabis.

Jake Shields

Jake Shields was once a Welterweight championship contender in the UFC, but today he promotes the use of marijuana in athletics. Shields stated that he believes it can help a lot with training for competitions. He says that using cannabis made training fun for him again.

Shields told one interviewer that using marijuana opened up his mind to a variety of fighting techniques. While he says that he doesn’t smoke every single day, he has become a big advocate for it.

Diaz Brothers

Nate and Nick Diaz both have a history of talking openly about using marijuana as successful UFC fighters. Nick was banished from the UFC for a period of five years after failing a drug test due to his marijuana usage.

He and his brother both say that they vape with THC-rich cannabis oil on a regular basis. In a bold move, Nick Diaz vaped with marijuana-based CBD oil during a press conference before a fight one time.

Ronda Rousey

There is no question that Ronda Rousey is one of the most accomplished female MMA fighters in the world. She has talked about using marijuana with no equivocations whatsoever. The tough fighter has opened up about this in numerous interviews over the years.

She also discussed using marijuana from a fairly early age in her autobiography book, which is titled “My Fight/Your Fight”. Rousey says that the Diaz brothers were largely responsible for getting her back into the world of marijuana.

Bas Rutten

Bas Rutten is yet another well-known mixed martial artist that has taken a very firm and positive stance on marijuana use. He has achieved some incredible feats in this sport over the years, but struggled with addiction for a long time.

Rutten has stated on numerous occasions that marijuana helped him overcome his substance abuse problems. He’s also said that it helped him deal with the soreness and pain that he experienced after fighting. Apparently even his daughter uses it as a means of keeping her skin clear and free of acne.
